It was a lovely day in April when I sat and painted most of this picture on the spot, before finishing it later in the warmth of the studio.
Painting ‘en plein air’ is something I try to do regularly; it’s more hit and miss than studio painting, but when it works, there’s a freshness despite the rough edges that can be very pleasing. I didn’t have to cheat much to find this natural composition.
Price includes mount and framing.

Venice
Image size: 370mm x 255mm
One of the most painted views in Venice, if not the world! But how to make it my own?
Restricting the palette to sea greens and blues inspired me to try for the atmosphere of expectation that comes with sparkles of sunlight on the water in the early morning. It was influenced by the late Edward Seago, who used such tricks to create space and depth in his landscapes.

This is the odd one out in the exhibition! It was 1971 and my first holiday abroad. We visited Mdina, on the top of the island.
The sun was overhead, a warm breeze rustled my shirtsleeves, and the smell of wild thyme was intoxicating. In that moment was the original inspiration for my ‘Travels with my Art’. I painted the scene once before from an old photograph, but it is a joy to paint again, as the sense of place comes back to me as though it was yesterday.

I was out for a run on a damp morning in Venice, when I saw reflections on the Piazzetta that led me to paint this scene. There is so much mood to Venice at the beginning and end of the day. It’s lovely when the sun shines, but equally interesting at other times.

After all the snow we had in the last winter, I wanted to include some snow scenes which I always enjoy painting.
This pretty lodge house must be a familiar sight to all regular motorists on the Fosseway. It is vernacular Cotswold architecture to the eaves but has an air of fantasy about it which is definitely enhanced by snow.

If I had a favourite city in Umbria it would be Todi.
Many other Cities of Umbria are in equal measure picturesque or spectacular, but there is a softness and beauty in its setting that lingers in the memory for me. On my last day I returned to Todi for a second visit and took the time to carefully paint this ancient doorway to the Cathedral in perfect morning sunlight. SOLD
