Snow near St Kenelms Well, Sudely Hill

Fully Framed
!
Size with mount: 475 x 390
When the weather comes down the Cotswolds can feel surprisingly remote and I love the silence that can come with walking in the snowbound depths of the countryside. This view is looking across the Winchcombe valley with the Malvern Hills just about visible in the distance. It’s lovely so long as you have a log-burner to come home to and nowhere to have to drive!

Snow on the Windrush at Burford

Fully Framed
!
Size with mount: 480 x 425
You have to leave the road and walk to find this view, west of Burford with the bridge just out of sight. I drew it on the spot one November when it was too cold to paint and I love the scene for its ‘English’ pastoral quality. The snowscenes in this exhibition are all in different light, some sunny and bright, others in that uniform blueness that casts no shadow. In this one the sun is trying to break through but I don’t know that it will.

Snow at Hazleton Village

Fully Framed
!
Size with mount: 455 x 405
A quintessential Cotswold village setting, with the Church, a Glebe House south facing, and adjoining  Church Farm with its barn and tallat steps. When it has snowed and the sun shines, the Cotswolds are so pretty that snowscenes such as this are irresistible to paint. I’ve painted this view in summer and I like the natural rhythm the winding road gives to the composition.

Stowell Park Gate House in Snow

!
An original watercolour painting

Image size: 280mm x 205mm

After all the snow we had in  the last winter, I wanted to include some snow scenes which I always enjoy painting.

This pretty lodge house must be a familiar sight to all regular motorists on the Fosseway. It is vernacular Cotswold architecture to the eaves but has an air of fantasy about it which is definitely enhanced by snow.

Snow at Chipping Campden

!
An original watercolour painting of Chipping Campden in Snow.

The recent snow has inspired me to paint a number of snowscenes, and in this depiction of the Almshouses in Chipping Campden, I am revisiting a scene I have painted before.

I have not put any figures in this picture, as I wanted it to be serene and uspoilt, like the snow before anyone has appeared and messed it up with footprints!

Arlington Row, Bibury

Arlington Row, Bibury in the snow.

An original watercolour painting.

I love painting snow, it’s so rewarding and pretty! But only from the comfort and warmth of my studio. Actually I did stand and do an drawing of the Bibury picture on the spot, but half an hour is enough. I have tried painting in the extreme cold – you put one wash of watercolour on the paper, and half an hour later it’s still wet! That’s my excuse anyway.

The Mill, Fairford

!
An original watercolour painting of The Mill at Fairford.

A well know view to local people, and a chance to indulge in painting an old Mill in the snow reflected in water. An interesting challenge in tone and colour, but the view is balanced out by the church in the distance, and it’s a very Cotswold view. This was painted a few days ago just before doing the Fairford Advent Market on Friday 3rd December. It was -2 degrees all evening! Brrrrrr!!!!!!
